Something’s Fishy

Scout by Land or Air (DC 15 or 10 Perception):
The sheer numbers of rivers crisscrossing this territory make it take double the travel time to cross, and even then only with extreme effort, rendering the PCs exhausted at the end of the day if a DC 15 fort save is failed. This can be bypassed by using the PCs’ own boat, or by taking the ferry.

Many minor rivers and streams crisscross these soggy hills. The land seems mostly barren and abandoned, save for one hunchbacked ferryman rowing a gondola slowly across one of the side streams, a jingling bell signaling his movement.

if either the river is crossed or the ferry is taken, when the PCs cross over a deep stretch of river, they are attacked from surprise by 6 skum sentries, on the hunt for breeding stock and food:

The ferryman himself is a grotesque freak with two wide-set eyes: he cheerfully writes this off as a birth defect, and humbly suggests that “Gozreh saved my sorry life.” He is actually a Dark Tapestry cleric with a lasting agreement with the skum; he moves the gondola into position and, when they attack, he begins channeling negative energy, chanting in Aklo and giggling madly.

The Ferryman
Use the stats of the Pirate Priest, but with a quarterstaff instead of a rapier (same damage) and negative energy channeling:

Loot
The ferryman carries a +1 chain shirt, a masterwork quarterstaff (his oar), 2 potions of cure moderate wounds, a wand of cure light wounds with 16 charges, 2 flasks of unholy water, a wand of barkskin with 8 charges, and a curiously unused hat of disguise.

If the PCs somehow search the skum’s underwater camp, they also find 2,248 gp in miscellaneous coinage, a two-hundred pound fishgold statue of Dagon worth 4,000 gp (requiring shenanigans to transport and sell), and 6 sets of masterwork chainmail and 6 masterwork tridents (the fallen weapons of the sentries)
